Tui Na (tuina) - Chinese Bodywork Massage Therapy
Chinese Tui-Na was called "An Mo" or massage in ancient times. The term Tui Na was first seen during the Ming Dynasty. Chinese Tui Na is a therapeutic approach guided by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and was first used to treat pediatric disease through massage manipulations. Tui Na is a very important component of Chinese Medicine alongside acupuncture and herbal prescription.
Throughout its history, Tui Na has been developed, refined and systematized by doctors in the colleges and hospitals of traditional Chinese medicine all over China.
The techniques of Tui Na and details of its uses in treating a range of health problems were already documented in the vast treatise "The Yellow Emperor's Classics of Internal Medicine", written about 2.500 years ago. After such a lengthy period of development and evolution, modern Tui Na is the most tried and tested hands-on therapy in the world.
In China, Tui-Na practitioners treat conditions that, in the West, would be treated by osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists or with strong medicines. Today it has become very advanced in its treatment for many diseases, used in many hospitals in China; it has become the frontline of healthcare, whereas in the West many problems tend to get treated only at a chronic stage. Therefore Tuina can and should also be used as a preventative form of treatment to maintain health and prevent accumulation of stress, disease and injury.
Tui na is performed over your clothed body. The massage is usually done using gentle to quite firm pressure using palms, thumbs, fingers, and elbows, added to this are various stretches. Tui Na works by applying pressure to acu-points, meridians and groups of muscles or nerves to remove blockages that prevent the free flow of energy (Qi). It can be more vigorous than other forms of massage.
As with other body therapies you may leave a little sore, light-headed or supercharged after your treatment, but mostly patients always feel better after Tuina. Ointments, herbal compresses, moxibustion and cupping maybe applied as an additional benefit to your personalized treatment.
